Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships 2024-2025

The Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) is the administering agency of the Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships program and is responsible for the payment of awards in accordance with the policies and regulations outlined in the Tri-Agency Research Training Award Holder’s Guide. Banting postdoctoral researchers may travel and conduct field research; however, they must continue to be based at their host institution. The Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships are valued at $70,000 (taxable) per year.

Eligibility Criteria Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

To be eligible for the award, applicants are required to confirm if the applicant and the host institution meet the criteria before applying. The eligibility criteria for the fellowship are mentioned below:

  • Citizenship: Citizen or a permanent resident of Canada or International students
  • Degree Completion Eligibility:
  • Fulfilled all degree requirements for Ph.D., Ph.D. equivalent or health professional degree.
  • Degree must be completed between September 15, 2018, and September 30, 2022, and before the start of their award.
  • Host Institution Eligibility:
  • Canadian universities
  • Foreign universities
  • Affiliated research hospitals, colleges and not-for-profit organizations.
  • Applicant will be considered ineligible if he/she holds a previous Banting Postdoctoral Fellowship

Application Process for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

  • Once your funding opportunity is opened to applications (for most funding opportunities, approximately two months before the application deadline), review the application instructions by selecting “Instructions” from the “Apply” column in the overview atop the description.
  • According to your instructions, click on the appropriate application forms, also found in the “Apply” section of the same overview.
  • Carefully review your application as you fill it out and ensure that you have provided any additional information requested in the appropriate formats, and contacted any required resources as outlined in the instructions.

How to Apply for Banting Postdoctoral Fellowships

Applicants are to follow the following steps:

  1. Confirm eligibility.
  2. Contact your desired host institution/supervisor.
  3. Register for Canadian Common CV (CCV) account, ResearchNet account, and complete the Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Self-Identification Questionnaire
  4. Create CCV (Vanier-Banting academic template) and link to ResearchNet application.
  5. Start a ResearchNet application.
  6. Identify area of research
  7. Identify participants.
  8. Identify referees.
  9. Enter degree information.
  10. Enter proposal information and supporting documents.
  11. Preview application materials
  12. Consent and submit application.
  13. Ensure attached documents meet presentation standards.
