Major university scholarships

1. Dean’s scholarship
Dean’s Scholarships are intended to attract high-caliber students to the University of Saskatchewan. These awards will be offered to students who have outstanding academic records, show research promise and are registering for the first time in a thesis or dissertation-based graduate program.

Value:
Master’s: $18,000 per year for two years (department/supervisor is required to fund the seconds year at the same level of support)
Doctoral: $22,000 for per year for three years plus tuition (department/supervisor is required to fund the third year at the same level of support)
Deadline:
Deadline is in September 2024

Eligibility:

To be eligible to be nominated for a Dean’s Scholarship, the student:

  • must be registering for the first time in a thesis or dissertation-based program at the University of Saskatchewan (students transferring from a Master to a doctoral program are also eligible as long as they have not registered in their doctoral program at the time of the deadline for the competition)
  • must have a minimum grade point entrance average of 85%
  • must show proof of research activity in refereed journal publications or conference presentations/publications (at least 1 publication or 1 presentation)
  • must be starting their graduate program in either January 2022, May 2024 or September 2024.

2. University of Saskatchewan Graduate Scholarships
The University of Saskatchewan Graduate Scholarship (UGS) is open to students in select departments only. New and continuing students in acceptable academic standing must be nominated by their departments.

Value: Master’s: $16,000 per year for up to two years; Ph.D.: $20,000 per year for up to three years.

3. Teacher-Scholar Doctoral Fellowships

Teacher-Scholar Doctoral Fellowships (TSDF), in partnership with the Gwenna Moss Centre for Teaching and Learning, are awarded through a university-wide competition to doctoral students in the 2nd to 5th year of their program, who have successfully completed their Ph.D. comprehensive exam by August 31st of the year applications are being considered. The fellowship duration is one year. Successful recipients receive training in university teaching and will deliver a course under the guidance of a faculty mentor.

Value: $21,000 over one year, less employee deductions.

4. University of Saskatchewan Graduate Teaching Assistantships

Students are hired by their academic units to assist with teaching and marking courses. New and continuing students should write to the Graduate Chair of the academic department to indicate their interest in being considered for a Graduate Teaching Assistantship (GTA).

Graduate employment offers are made by departments and colleges. Positions are in scope of the Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 40004, payable at union rates of pay, less mandatory employment deductions.

5. University of Saskatchewan Graduate Research Assistantships

Faculty members holding research funding may have research opportunities available to graduate students. New and continuing students should contact faculty members doing research in their area of interest to ask about possible Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) opportunities. Students should be prepared to provide full information on their experience in the field.

Graduate employment offers are made by departments and colleges. Positions are in scope of the Public Service Alliance of Canada Local 40004, payable at union rates of pay, less mandatory employment deductions.

How to apply University of Saskatchewan Scholarships

All master’s, doctoral, graduate certificate and postgraduate diploma students apply online, but the application procedures can vary between programs.

Decide on a program and review the program’s page for the following information:

Deadlines – Academic units set their own deadlines for applications. Keep in mind that academic units make decisions on scholarship and fellowships at set times during the year. These vary from unit to unit and may be different from application deadlines.
Admission requirements – Requirements for graduate programs will vary. Please check the program’s page to confirm the specific requirements.
Application process – Some departments require you to identify a potential supervisor or research area before applying and some require additional documentation.

You will need to have ready:

  • The names and email addresses of your referees for your letters of recommendation.
  • Ideally, the email addresses provided for referees should be their professional email addresses from their post-secondary institution or organization.
  • Your academic history from all post-secondary institutions you have attended. Transcripts from all post-secondary institutions a student has attended will be required.
  • Visa or MasterCard for online payment of $120 application fee. Payment by Flywire is available for international applicants. This payment is non-refundable and processing on an application will not be done prior to the payment being received.

Admission Requirements University of Saskatchewan Scholarships

A minimum of three consecutive years of full-time study or completion of a graduate degree at a recognized post-secondary institution, where the exclusive language of instruction and examination of the program and/or institution is English.

Master’s Degree

  • A four-year undergraduate degree, or equivalent, from a recognized college or university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study, OR,
  • A three-year first cycle undergraduate degree, in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study, from an institution that meets the criteria set forth in the Bologna Declaration, will be acceptable as the equivalent of an undergraduate honors degree.
  • A cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (USask grade system equivalent) in the last two years of full-time study (e.g., 60 credit units USask equivalent).
  • Demonstrated ability for independent thought, advanced study, and research.
  • Proof of English language proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English.

Ph.D. Degree

  • A Master’s degree, or equivalent, from a recognized university in an academic discipline relevant to the proposed field of study.
  • A cumulative weighted average of at least 70% (USask grade system equivalent) in the Master’s degree.
  • Demonstrated ability for independent thought, advanced study, and research.
  • Proof of English language proficiency may be required for international applicants and for applicants whose first language is not English.
